The Alamo, San Antonio, Texas

The Alamo was bathed in blue lights on this blustery night to remind folks about the dangers of diabetes. The lone guard was walking slowly around, reminding people that various monuments nationwide were bathed in blue for the same cause.

Nice, isn't it?

Spurs Photo Night November 19th

My friends from my flickr.com photography group got a sweet offer from a friend at Spurs.com. He's offering us discount tickets and media passes so we can bring cameras to a Spurs game. Cool! He says we can't shoot the game itself (kinda weird, I know), but we can shoot the fans and maybe the empty court... Either way, friends and family are invited to a fun night out together.

Here is where you can buy tickets. Use the promotion code "photo."

We are discussing this event on our message board. And here is the official announcement on nba.com.

Passes will be issued once inside the building...everyone should come in the East Entrance (the main entrance). There's a "help booth" to the right of the entrance and the folks at that booth will check your tickets and issue a hang tag or neck tag to wear during the game. The security folks will know to let in people with cameras and lenses at the East Entrance.

Pass this link to your friends all the information in one place: www.flickr-club-sa.com.

November 19th: Flickr + Spurs!

Hey Jim - Very pleased to share the secure link for Flickr members:

http://www.nba.com/jm.jsp?ref=spurs_flickr_offer0809&dest=https://oss.ticketmaster.com/html/go.htmI?l=EN&t=spurs&o=15007294&g=140

Special Offer Code: [email Jim to find out the code]
Basically this link will let people buy tickets at a reduced price to the Denver Nuggets game on 11/19/08. I'll send a link to the spurs.com landing page that will spell out contest rules, but I need you to let me know if Flickr members run out of tickets...I think the Spurs set aside 30 or 40 seats at a reduced price for this game. If anyone gets a message that no tickets are available, let me know and I'll have them open up some more seats.
Thanks again (the Rampage group stuff looks great!) and I'll be in touch with another link for the photo contest rules within the next week. Basically, 1 camera body and 2 lenses are allowed in the building for this night only - nothing bigger than 300mm, no monopods, no tripods...rules still being solicted from the NBA but those were the high points.

San Antonio Rampage!

#1 fan of the Rampage!

He was just taking a quick break, heading to the bathroom to check to see if he messed himself again. He came back quickly, so I bet everything was OK this time!

Here is a slideshow of some of our best photos from the game.

Anyone interested in going to the Rampage game on Saturday 10/11 (7:00pm)? Tickets are only $7!!!

Bring Your DSLR!!!!

I can talk to Elisa and see about getting additional seats in our box and having us all together as a group. And if you have kids they should enjoy it as well, Cadence has a blast at the games.

PLUS.... Elisa could come over and talk to us about getting us Media Passes for upcoming games, she's wanting to talk to everyone about that. It's an exciting opportunity.

So... face-off at 7:00pm, doors open at 6:30pm.

Anyone interested?

Meeting October 8, 6pm-7pm

Meeting October 8, 6pm-7pm

Jim@Flickr-Club-SA.com says:

I'd like to restart our monthly meetings.

There is no ideal time or place, and we hold much of our discussions online, but I would like to meet every second Wednesday from 6pm-7pm at my church in the "Mary Shelley" room. I'll have a big flickr-club-sa.com sign outside so you can find it.

It's at the intersection of 10 and 410 on the northwest side of town. Church website: www.firstuusanantonio.org

I'd like to do the following things during this quick meeting:
1. Get to know more of you.
2. Get a quick lesson on the use of external flashes. (I'll need someone else to give this lesson since I don't know anything about it!)
3. Talk about the Spurs shoot on Nov 11.
4. Have a free photo swap where we swap 8x10 photos. (Or, just bring some that others could take for free.)
5. Get some ideas about some projects we can work on together.
6. How we would put the group's best 200 photos in a book and offer it for sale.

Here's a map.

For followup discussions, see this thread.

Chalk it Up!

http://artpace.org/chalkItUp.php

It's kinda fun. Kinda messy. Lots and lots of people. This year they'll have an expanded food court and ... break dancing! (I miss 1984 so much.)

Some experienced artists will join the fun along with groups of kids to make large murals on the sidewalks of Houston Street in downtown San Antonio.

Spurs + Flickr-Club-SA.com = Awesome!

Spurs + Flickr-Club-SA.com = Awesome!

You may not agree with my math, but I'm hoping you'll agree that we have a fantastic opportunity coming our way.

Someone who works with the Spurs contacted me and wants us to come to a game. Read more below.

Here's what he said:

"The Spurs will have Flickr night on [Tuesday] November 11 (vs the Knicks) where Flickr members can purchase tickets for $15 and get a credential for their camera to take photos of fans during the game (game footage photos are technically not allowed per NBA rules). At halftime, the Spurs will make available a bank of Internet-connected computers where Flickr members can upload their photos and submit their favorite 2 or 3 fan photos (keep the game photos to yourselves) to a contest on spurs dot com. In the third quarter a panel of Spurs front office execs and a celebrity judge (probaly a former player) will choose one winner who will get a pair of lower level tickets to a game later in the season and a courtside media credential to shoot photos of the players during the pre-game period. Their winning photo will also be featured on spurs dot com and the Spurs Flickr page.

They've penciled in a game in January as well, but if the November game brings out a good crowd, 20 or 30 people, then they'll open it up for more Flickr nights.

I'm waiting to get the secure ticket link that'll allow you to send people to spurs dot com to buy their tickets and be counted as part of the Flickr group. This is the only way Flickr members will be able to get their camera credentials. Tickets don't go on sale until October 4th and they said they'll have the secure link built later that week. As soon as I get it, I'll send it your way and post it on our Flickr site (as well as in the San Antonio Spurs Group page)."

Back to Jim's comments:

Watch this discussion for more details as they become available.

It will be important for at least 20 of us to go to the game and participate. I'm hoping for 30-40. I don't know if we have a limit yet, and I won't be in charge of deciding who gets to go if there is a limit. Prob whoever buys the special tickets first will get to go.

Cool, huh?
